- What is Powerlink Licensing?
EMC´s online customer self-service portal for activation and administration of electronic software license entitlements.
What is an Entitlement? An entitlement is an electronic record representing the type, version, and quantity of the software to which you have purchased a license. When an entitlement is activated an electronic license key or license file is generated.
What is License Activation? An online process by which Customers and Partners access Powerlink Licensing to generate license file(s) or key(s) from their entitlements. License activation occurs after Customers and/or Partners receive a LAC (License Authorization Code) letter and the LAC number listed on their LAC letter is redeemed.
What is a License File/License Key?The output of activation used to determine authorization for software usage. Helps customers manage their compliance with EMC ´ s end user license agreement (EULA).
What is a Locking ID?- During the license activation process the system on which the license(s) will be installed is usually identified.
- To ensure an unambiguous association between the license and the system, a key attribute of the system is identified (e.g., the MAC address, host ID or IP address) and encoded into the license as the locking ID.
- This prevents the license from being inadvertently copied or moved to other systems and helps the customer maintain compliance with their license agreement with EMC.
How do I find my Locking ID?This varies by product see the Locking ID Help Guide.
What is an Activation Certificate? When customers and partners activate entitlements, Powerlink Licensing creates a certificate which contains the license key(s) and/or the license file(s)
What is a License Authorization Code (LAC)?- When EMC issues new license entitlements to a customer based on a purchase, evaluation or other event, the entitlements are associated to a unique License Authorization Code (LAC).
- A LAC can have one or more entitlements associated to it. A LAC is the primary identifier of the entitlement(s), used by the customer or partner to locate and activate licenses via Powerlink Licensing.
- At the time a LAC is generated it is usually emailed to the customer, but this is not always the case for evaluation licenses or for purchases of certain products.
What is a LAC Letter or LAC Email?Letter emailed or physically delivered to customers during order processing and fulfillment. The LAC letter contains instructions for downloading software binaries as well as activating your entitlements.
The LAC Letter also contains your software license authorization code (LAC).
How do I find my LAC?When your software order is fulfilled you will receive an email or letter that includes the LAC for your order and instructions for activating entitlements online with Powerlink Licensing. See example below:
If you have misplaced your LAC, contact Worldwide Licensing Support.
What is Software ID?A Software ID is an alphanumeric value that is inserted into a product’s license file to help customers and EMC representatives identify the software asset. There are two primary use cases where the Software ID will be required:
1. Opening a Service Request: Enter the value into the 'Product ID' field in support.emc.com to open a new service request.
2. Enabling Remote Connectivity to EMC: If an EMC software product has remote connectivity functionality, and the customer has consented to data transfers, the software ID will be used by EMC to identify the incoming file transfer. Typically, this is an automated process, and a serial number may be used in-place of the Software ID when available.
It is important to note that not all EMC software has a Software ID and that the ID is not required for the purposes of licensing. If an EMC product has adopted the Software ID, a 'Software ID' tab will be present in the Powerlink Licensing 'View Certificate' Page and the associated IDs will be listed within the tab.
How do I know if my entitlements are part of an Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) or Volume Software License Agreement (VSLA)?If the License Authorization Code (LAC) begins with ELA or VSLA, then the entitlement associated with the LAC are subject to an ELA or VSLA between your company and EMC. See example below:
What is Rehost?Rehost is the process of moving activated entitlements from one device or machine to a different device or machine. A rehost may be partial (moving a portion of the entitlements) or full (moving everything on the device or machine).
For example, a full rehost need to be completed when a new server is installed and replaces an existing server. The entitlements would need to be rehosted and new authorization codes/key file(s) generated based on the locking ID of the new server. The rehost operation is done via Powerlink Licensing.
What is a Site?A site represents some meaningful way for a company to manage its entitlements. For example, a site might represent a business division or a geographic location. EMC uses the Dun & Bradstreet DUNS as its primary tool to manage company sites.
Note: Site ID in Powerlink Licensing is not the same as Site ID in Powerlink
What is a Coordinator?A coordinator is a point of contact at a customer site that is responsible for the licensing aspect of the customer´ s relationship with EMC. A user with the role of Coordinator can manage all entitlements and activations for the sites the user is associated to.
What licensing activities can an EMC Online Support full vs. Lite user perform?Lite User: While a new account in the EMC Online Support is being validated a user will have access to a subset of EMC Online Support features. This limited access includes access to the Powerlink Licensing application.
Full user: Both types of users can utilize their License Authorization Code (LAC) to activate and manage their software entitlements, and obtain license files/license keys, and move and rehost entitlements as required.

What is the License Site Number?'License Site Number' refers to the site to which your license entitlement is associated. Your company may have multiple License Sites and your access to viewing and activating licenses will depend on how your profile is connected to each License Site. Please note that your License Site Number is different from the Site ID you will find on the EMC Support Service Center web pages.
What does the IB Status field indicate in Powerlink Licensing?IB Status: This field in Powerlink Licensing, when populated with 'de-installed' indicates that your software entitlement in our EMC Install Base is de-installed.
While the software entitlement remains at your disposal in Powerlink Licensing for future transactions (activate, rehost), if you wish to change its IB Status please contact your authorized reseller or your EMC Sales Support Renewals' account team.Note: Where the IB status field is blank no action is required.
How do I find by Symmetrix ID (Symm ID)?Open a command prompt on the server running the Solutions Enabler application.
At the prompt, enter the following command and press enter:
Symcfglist
The SYMMID column contains the Symmetrix serial numbers for every Symmetrix array the SE Host is connected to. Choose the Symm ID for which you want to license SPA.
If the Customer is using SMC to manage the array, they would expand the Symmetrix Arrays folder in the SMC navigation tree. All Symmetrix arrays that can be seen will be listed:
